Viewer discretion advised…disturbing images & sounds.
My football players, college law enforcement students, women’s lifting teams, and gym members at the gym I own, X Fitness, presume I love to watch the NFL because I have been addicted to coaching football for free for 40 years. They think I’m kidding when I tell them that I cannot and will not watch the NFL or college football or any football, on TV or in the stands.
Here’s one of the top 51 reasons why I have coached football for 40 years for free but will not watch the NFL or college football or any football of any kind, on TV or in the stands: https://www.si.com/nfl/packers/news/matt-lafleur-wave
That article shocked me. I can’t take back the 3 minutes of my life I spent reading it. Green Bay Packer head coach Matt Lafleur complained to the media about Packer fans. He complained about how fans were being fans. He complained that Packer’s fans made too much noise and did “The Wave” during a home game. I felt like weeping. An NFL head coach whining that millionaire players need silence to prevent being distracted.
Here’s another one of the top 51 reasons why I have coached football for 40 years but will not watch football of any kind, anywhere. Last weekend, I made the brutal mistake of channel-surfing and landing on the San Francisco 49ers – Los Angeles Chargers PRE-SEASON game. Rookie QB Trey Lance was in the game for San Francisco. He threw a TD pass. The 49ers went for two. Lance ran it in. Holding penalty. Called back. Incredibly, the 49ers kicked. They choose to kick a single point-after instead of going for two to give their rookie QB another rep, another chance to learn, to develop, to prove his skills…in a PRE-SEASON GAME. I forgot to heed my own advise: viewer discretion advised!
I thank God Almighty every day for my poor, illiterate, Italian immigrant father Antonio who hated sports, hated me watching sports, and always asked, “Are they going to pay you???” when I watched sports in the 1960s on our black & white TV. I thought Antonio was insane. He wasn’t. Antonio was a participator, never a spectator, the toughest worker I have ever witnessed in my life in any of the professions I have been blessed to work in. He didn’t watch. He worked.
