Throwing the game – a Conspiracy Theory

The easiest way to throw a defense into chaos is to throw the game. Triple meaning – throw a lot, throw it all over the place, and throw it to every receiver. Throwing the game throws any defense at any level into chaos because every defense is built to stop the run first. Its’ part of the football brainwashing, the football myths passed down from one generation to the next. Football has evolved. Offenses don’t line up in a double tight-end, three-back formation, play after play, game after game. Offenses have spread, including the power runners. The reason is that offensive coordinators started thinking outside the box, literally and figuratively, by taking advantage of the rules instead of letting the rules take advantage of them.

Building a defense to stop the run first will get you bombed, literally and figuratively. Your defense will get bombed deep and bombed on the scoreboard. Defenses have to be coordinated the other way – stop the pass first, then the run. In other words, run defense has to be part of pass defense, not vice-versa. Installing a defensive system has to start from its deepest point by teaching coverage first, followed by run defense. But that’s not the case. Film study proves that. Analyze film of your opponent’s defense and you will find overwhelming evidence that defenses are still built to stop the run first and stop the pass second. Building a defense this way is your biggest advantage as an offensive coordinator because it’s easy to mess with the minds of any defensive coordinator and of every player on his defense by throwing the game.

Throwing the game doesn’t mean ‘controlled’ passing, referring to a limited passing system that limits attack areas and limits the weapons used. Throwing the game means ‘controlling’ passing, referring to passing that controls the defense – mind, body, and soul. If your passing system does not control the opposing defense, they will control you.
The more you throw the game, the easier it is to run away with the game. Dual meaning: (a) Throwing the game makes it easier to run against opponents who out-match you in the natural talent department and, (b) throwing the game makes it easier for underdogs to run away on the scoreboard.

I’ve been a head coach for 30 out of my 40 seasons of coaching. Not one of my teams as head coach was a natural powerhouse. Not one of my teams had an embarrassment of riches. But we’ve been blessed to turn many opponents into an embarrassment of riches. Coaching in poverty needs a solution. Coaching a poor team has to be experienced to be believed. There is no greater coaching adversity than coaching in poverty – no JV teams, no home games, no normal practice field, no money, no assistant coaches, no state-of-the-art sleds and practice equipment. Coaching in poverty is an awakening – intellectually, emotionally, spiritually. It teaches you to open your heart, your mind, and your eyes to what counts, how to make every second count, and how to make every rep count.

The solution to throwing the game is a Conspiracy Theory, referring to Secret Plan that is not kept secret. It’s a Secret Scheme intended to overthrow the opposing defense without overthrowing them. Coaching in poverty enriched my coaching experience intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. It forced me to develop a Conspiracy Theory called the SWAT System – the SWAT No-Huddle Offense, SWAT Defense, SWAT special teams, and most importantly, SWAT strength and conditioning. The SWAT System is more than a playbook. It’s a lifestyle on and off the field.
