There’s one play you can’t make.

Here’s Real-Life Lesson #1,334 that I’ve taught to football players for 40 years – don’t play with fire. Dual meaning.

First meaning. Don’t play around with the fire of unresolved conflict. It will burn you up from top to bottom.  Don’t burn up from the heat of unresolved conflict. Unresolved conflict will burn up mind, body, and soul. Unresolved conflict burns up individuals and teams from the inside-out. It leaves you and your team catatonic, immobile, and unresponsive. Unresolved conflict is a social disease. It weakens people and teams to a dysfunctional state.

Second meaning. Don’t’ mess around with a soul on fire, yours or your competitor’s. A soul on fire is special. It’s a blessing. It’s the greatest source of energy. A soul on fire is supplied by the Most High that produces the Lifter’s High. But a soul on fire is a double-edge sword. It will lift you and your team to previously unimagined heights if you use it. But if you don’t, it will burn you up. Here’s an excerpt from my book Soul of a Lifter: “We are all born with God-given gifts, limitless potential. Some bury them. Some build them. But at some point, if you bury them, it’s going to hurt like hell. When it does, you become an emotional wreck who suffers the hell of underachieving which manifests in resentment, bitterness, contempt, and outright hate.”

You won’t get away with putting out your fire. You pay for it with another fire, the burning inner conflict of Cognitive Dissonance. Don’t play with fire. They next time you choose to run from a challenge or let your team down or cause hell on your team, think again. Think of all those who would gladly switch places with you – the sick, the dying, the hungry, the poor. Be more or be less. It’s your biggest decision today. The beauty of coaching football is watching how your team exercises – the exercise of free will. There’s no instant replay in football or real-life. You’re stuck with the call you made and how it played out. If it didn’t work out for you, work out harder. Work out like your life depends on it. Or watch someone else get fitted for championships rings. You can be a spectator or a player. You can sit in the stands and live vicariously or play the game while others live vicariously through you. You can sit on your ass or kick some ass.

This is a copyrighted excerpt from my new book Midnight Shift from Hell that focuses on becoming more or less by using your fire for good or bad.  You can download a free audio version of this blog on Blunt Talk Podcast, episode 112, compliments of X Fitness.
