Blunt Talk Business Fitness Football Gino's Blog Leadership Motivation Policing Soul of a Lifter

The Sound of Lifting.

My Top 1000 Workout Song of the Day is the Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin. It’s a masterpiece. It was released way back in 1970, year 2 of my 47-year workout streak. I don’t live in the past but I visit the past during every workout. Every workout connects the past, the present, and the future. What was, what is, what will be. Here’s Real-Life Lesson #2,911 that I’ve taught football players for 40 years and college law enforcement students for two decades – train like your life depends on it. If you can’t find the motivation to workout, think of the worst – the worst shape you will get in, the worst teammate you will be, the worst backup you will be. If you can’t get motivated on your own to build your very best self, find a coach. Search for a coach who will do for you what you are unwilling and incapable of doing alone. Find a coach who will build capacity. Lifting, both kinds – weights and souls – is a joyous expression of the soul and the strongest expression of love for your team. I reminded students and athletes every day that the next time you feel unmotivated to work out, think of those who would gladly trade places with you – the sick, the dying, the hungry, the poor.

Music is vital for the full experience of working out. My Top 1000 Workout Music List has been a work-in-progress since I started working out in 1969. It’s an eclectic music list. There is no genre missing. Last month, I added two albums by Peter Noreika from Buffalo, New York, a recent guest on Blunt Talk Podcast. The link to the podcast is at and
