The Obesity Gene

I’m purebred Italian. I was taught the poor immigrant Italian version of the Golden Rule – respecting others was not optional. Questioning authority wasn’t optional. I was taught to give instant credibility to any professional – cops, teachers, doctors, and anyone who held a heavyweight title. Then I became a cop at 18 and found out that it was a fairy tale. Credibility is not instantly awarded. Credibility is earned. Policing taught me that awarding instant credibility is both foolish and dangerous. Reason? My coach officer said it best – he taught me the 3 B’s…”Bullshit baffles brains.”

#LoveThyNeigbour is one thing. But believing that everyone who has a title knows what they’re talking about, without any evidence to prove it, is another thing. In 1992, I wrote my first Criminal Investigation textbook. I devoted an entire chapter to the psychology of evaluating credibility, a step-by-step process that allows you to gather the right evidence and make an informed decision about who is bullshitting and who isn’t, instead of blindly guessing. Without a proven track record, I don’t believe anything you have to say. Zero. It’s the first rule of survival – s/he who asserts must prove. If you have something to say, back it up with hardcore evidence. I use the credibility evaluation procedure that I wrote about, in every profession I work in. Without it, you don’t stand a chance. I learned this lesson a long time ago. If you instantly believe bullshit, your mind will be baffled. This includes the fitness industry.

I never have and never will believe anyone who tries to convince me there isn’t an obesity gene. I never have and never will believe that I can get ripped and cut and lean with gigantic muscles…naturally. And in 6 weeks or 12 weeks. I have the obesity gene. If I don’t workout every day I will become obese again. The obesity gene is not an excuse for getting fat. It’s reality. There’s scientific evidence that some of us are genetically predisposed to piling on fat faster than the rest. Dual meaning. We get fatter faster than the rest of the world and we get fatter if we rest. I have worked out for 45 years. I have coached tens of thousands. I tell them the same advice I will tell you – be careful what you believe about fat loss and getting into top shape. I never have and never will believe fairy tales about fat loss. The obesity gene is a brutal enemy that I fight every day of my life. Those who have the obesity gene will understand the true nature of the fight.

The vast majority of those I’ve coached are not genetically gifted. The majority are like me. We have to struggle every day of our lives to stay in shape. I started working out in 1969, before the first lunar landing. Anyone who tries to tell me how to get ripped, gigantic muscles naturally needs to show me blood tests and polygraph test results before I believe anything. I have invested more reps that most people on planet Earth ever will, without ever having zero percent body-fat or anything close to it. I’ve never been on the cover of magazines. But my workouts have worked out. I work out for many other reasons including an intense desire to avoid returning to my childhood obesity. There’s a longer list of reasons but not going back in time to obesity is at the top of the list.

I have been blessed to have coached in a sport that allows me to eyewitness incredible transformations in body, mind, and soul, especially in those who share my obesity gene. Anyone can coach genetically gifted athletes. Not everyone can coach the ungifted. You have to be one to know one. You have to be one to coach one. If you have anything resembling the obesity gene, never give up hope. Never give in to your genetics. Adversity makes you grow other things. You learn to grow some when obstacles have to be moved.
