The most important person to listen to.

When I was a police officer between 1975-1990, I wrote thousands of pages of notes and reports, including verbatim conversation during questioning of suspects. Months later, I had to read them over to refresh my memory for court testimony. The result was the phenomena of self-study. Studying what you said was a psychological exercise in listening to yourself.

There are many important voices that we have to listen to every day of our lives to move forward and reach higher. But no voice is more important than your own. The most important person to listen to is yourself, to determine what you’ve learned from the important voices in your life.

Reviewing notes of my conversations taught me lessons about winning and losing, about what worked and what doesn’t work, about success and failure by whatever definition you prefer. Listening to yourself reveals to you what you are unleashing and what you are holding back. Listening to yourself forces you to learn who you are and who you are not. Listening to yourself tells you the truth about what you are inside a room – a blessing or a curse. Listening to yourself teaches you what you are to others, what you give and what you take.

Without listening to yourself, you will remain in the dark. Dual meaning. You will never be enlightened about your true self and you will never be a light in other lives.

Listen to yourself the next time you talk, the next time you’re in a room with people, the next time you’re on the phone. Listen you what you say. Then do the hard part. Listen to what you didn’t say.
