The adversity of adversity.

Here’s Real-Life Lesson #8,725 that I’ve taught football players for 40 years and college law enforcement students for 2 decades – kill adversity or adversity kills you.

Adversity is not created equal. There is life and death adversity and everything else. Life and death adversity is in a league of its own. It should have its own word to differentiate the highest level of adversity from ordinary First World problems. Actually, it does – hell. Hell is the highest-level or lowest level of adversity, depending on perspective, because adversity either brings you higher or lower depending on what you do with it.

I’ve taught athletes and students to never confuse different levels of adversity. Don’t diminish the significance of hell-adversity and don’t elevate ordinary adversity to hell-adversity. That’s why I teach that 4th down in a football game is not hell-adversity. Being behind at halftime isn’t hell-adversity. Throwing an interception isn’t hell-adversity. These are all ordinary challenges that have to be met and overcome. Change the perception of adversity, change the outcome. The moment you correct an ordinary challenge, you will face it with routine tenacity. Business as usual. You will never choke. You will never fall apart as long as you never blow ordinary challenges out of proportion.

The ability to routinely solve ordinary challenges doesn’t just happen. It takes structured training, an expertly prerequisite-based curriculum taught by a proven, experienced coach/mentor. Contrary to popular myth, self-directed learning will not make you an expert. Self-directed learning is not the best way to learn. Self-directed learning will never get you to the next-level because a self-directed learner is taught by an amateur. Teach yourself anything and you will remain an amateur forever. You will never progress to the highest levels of your field. You will never turn pro. A coach/mentor has the experience that the learner does not have. A coach/mentor has deeper thinking than the learner. Deeper thinking is the capacity to apply volumes of information at Google-speed. A coach/mentor can teach you high-speed processing, referring to Rapid Decision-Making, the main element of not choking when you face true hell-adversity.

There is no limit to the adversity that real-life comes up with. The strength to handle it doesn’t just happen. When adversity strikes, you either kill adversity or adversity kills you in mind, body, and soul. Adversity doesn’t solve itself. It takes heavy lifting in mind, body, and soul. Adversity forces you to make a choice – run or fight. Run away from the fight or stand up and fight.

Standing up and fighting is easier said than done. It requires Fighter Strength. Fighter Strength starts at the top with the will-to-fight mindset and works downward to fighting skills. I’ve taught students and athletes for decades that the will-to-fight mindset and fight skills don’t just happen. You are not born with them. Unless you develop both, you have no hope killing real-life hell-adversity. The solution is MBS Strength, a mind, body, & soul mentor/coach. Find a mentor/coach who will build the strength in mind, body, and soul to fight through adversity instead of running away from it.
