No team or individual is immune to highs and lows for as long as s/he is in the game. The only way to save you and your team from the sinking feeling of falling behind in the game is to retire, sit in the stands, or never get in the game to begin with. The true test of leadership skill happens when things sink to hell. Leadership isn’t reserved for the ‘’boss.’’ Every individual on any team or in any organization is responsible for being a leader when all hell breaks loose.
Leadership is not created equal. Leadership lessons learned and experienced are not the same in every leadership position. It’s fashionable to lump all leaders together under the sexy title of ”leader” but leadership challenges do not have the same degree of difficulty.
Business shares a similarity to sports – the score changes. You score points and allow points to be scored. The scoreboard in business is income. I was blessed to have worked in two public sector jobs where income was guaranteed regardless of performance. Win or lose, a pay-cheque was deposited in my account every week. Entrepreneurship is different. Your income is not guaranteed. If you lose, you lose money. If you screw up, you don’t get paid. If you don’t perform, you go broke. If you don’t score enough points, you drop out. Entrepreneurship is pure meritocracy – you get paid on true merit. Nepotism, favouritism, and all the other security protections won’t pay your business. There is no union protection, no collective bargaining agreement, and no grievances when your business doesn’t earn enough money.
If your business team is failing, if your business is bombing, you have to become a true #leader. Weak #leadership won’t workout in your self-generated business. You can’t hide weak leadership in entrepreneurship. Incompetent entrepreneurial leadership in business is exposed by your business’s income. Owning your own business is the most accurate measure of your leadership skills because business has the most honest, merciless scoreboard – earn your income or go flat broke. Weak entrepreneurial leadership has immediate consequences – the death of your business. You lose not only on the scoreboard, you lose everything.
The soul of entrepreneurship is problem-solving. Fearlessly standing up to pressure and making tough decisions, day by day, moment by moment. Pressure will make you or break you – financially, physically, psychologically, and spiritually. You can’t blink as a business owner. Blink and you sink. When it’s your own money at stake, you quickly learn the true elements of leadership or an obituary is written up for your business. Your business is written off, wiped out, and becomes another business casualty statistic.
Policing taught me the power that investigation has on problem solving. Build a case, find evidence, interpret the evidence correctly, and reach an informed decision. Coaching football taught me the same lesson – the power of film study to investigate the strengths and weakness of my team and the opponent. Owing two businesses has taught me that investigating and studying past performance applies to business as well. Studying past performance is the major element of finding the formula for winning, by whatever definition you attach to winning and success.
A number of reasons cause failure but there is one element of failure that tops the list. The number reason why your business or team is sinking is the topic on my latest Blunt Talk Episode called “Missing Person.” It’s a free, permanently archived download, compliments of my two businesses – X Fitness and Jordan Publications.
