The search for the secret to fitness is found in the place where you least likely look. The search goes on and on and on for misguided reasons because we believe that the secret lies somewhere far away, in another dimension, in some distant place that couldn’t possibly be nearby. Far, far away always seems more interesting, more exciting, more attractive, more knowledgeable…more of what we’re looking for because, well, what’s close by is too familiar, too near, too accessible. If the secret is too close, then it’s too good to be true so we turn our attention once again to the distance because the distance is appealing.
Here’s a true story of an athlete I coached who searched like hell, far and wide, for the fitness secret. I’ll use the name Lombershone. More than anything, Lombershone wanted to bench press and squat 225 lbs for mega-reps to set new records. The number of reps lifted at 225 lbs is the litmus test for the next level. It tests sustainable strength – how long can you stay strong when you’re in a fight with an opponent who wants the same thing as you. Every 2-3 weeks, Lombershone tried a new workout instead of sticking to The Plan. He searched online for the next big thing. He watched Youtube videos hoping to discover the secret workout that would make him leaner, stronger, and, above all, lift more and more and more.
He watched people in the gym doing new things and imitated them. He asked people what they were doing and decided, ‘What the hell, no harm in trying something different.” For years, Lombershone’s new workouts failed to work out. He never set new records. Instead he got weaker. His 225 tests went downhill as others passed him by.
One day, Lombershone asked for help. “ I can’t break any 225 personal bests. I can’t set new records.” I asked him if he was following The Plan. He said he had been “changing up his workouts because he was told that new workouts would be fresh and motivating.” I told him that fresh applied to fruits and vegetables, not workout plans.
On day one, I coached him through the Original Plan. He doubled his reps. He lifted exactly double his previous reps in just one workout. By day 4, he added another 33% more reps. The story didn’t end there. There’s more but it’s too long of a story. Every time I tell that story, I’m asked, “What was the secret?” I give the same answer every time – “Lombershone found the secret by looking in the most obvious place.” The secret to fitness was found in the place where Lombershone would least likely look. Instead, Lombershone searched on and on and on for misguided reasons because Lombershone believed that the secret was somewhere far away, in another dimension, in some distant place that couldn’t possibly be nearby. Far, far away seemed more interesting, more exciting, more attractive, more knowledgeable…more of what Lombershone was looking for because, well, what’s close by is too familiar, too near, too accessible. Because the secret was too close, it was too good to be true so Lombeshone turned the attention once again to the distance because the distance is appealing. Then it finally hit Lombershone – what a waste of time bouncing around, searching for the secret, going off track instead of sticking to The Plan.
