Every football team I have ever coached in 40 seasons had seniors and juniors. Dual meaning (i) Players in their last year (seniors) and rookies (juniors). (ii) players who act like they are eligible for old-age pension (seniors) and those who have no intention of retiring (juniors).

My message has been in two parts:
1. Act your age.
2. Don’t act your age.

If you’re young, don’t act old. If you’re old, don’t act old. Old has nothing to do with age. Old is inactivity. Old is idleness. Old is living vicariously through others. Old is walking slower, talking slower, thinking slower, moving slower… doing slower… at any age.

Old, at any age, is living life in the proverbial rocking chair, watching others live life while you practice voyeurism. Old is packing it in, packing up dreams and ambitions into the bottomless pit of the leisurely soft life that turns muscle to mush at the speed of sound – the sound of chronic complaining, chronic excuses, chronic self-pity, chronic self bullshit, chronic self-deception, chronic rationalization intended to make the great escape from reality and live the life of illusion packed tightly in delusion.

We are in Phase One of our Team Lifting. Every Phase One Team Lifting in my coaching career has been a spiritual experience, a time of renewal where there’s hope of something great being built from scratch. Every Phase One Team Lifting experience builds armor to protect us against the relentless attacks that threaten our body, mind, and soul from the anarchy of fear-mongers who are hell-bent on invading our psychological space with poison.

Phase One Team Lifting only scratches the surface of the limitless human potential we all have at any age. The most enduring lesson learned from Phase One Team Lifting is changing attitudes toward ‘The Process.’ The Process makes or breaks individuals and teams. The Process presents a heavy weight that is either lifted or turns into a crushing weight. The difference is choice of lifestyle – commitment to eating right or wrong, commitment to working out or hanging out, commitment to lifting or lowering your ass, commitment to running or running away, commitment to getting stronger or weaker.

Phase One Team Lifting has always been transformational and always will be. It’s a change agent intended to bring out our best instead of our worst. It all starts at the top with the Championship Mindset, the mentality of doing what it takes to separate from the rest. Dual meaning. No one in their right mind makes losing a goal. No one playing with a full deck sets out to end up in last place. No sane human is content with suffering loss after loss. No right-thinking individual sets a goal of getting hit and run over and over and over, like a human punching bag.

Your love-hate with The Process determines what place you end up – first place, last place. or dropping out of the game. There’s a secret to loving The Process. It starts with finding someone who already loves The Process. You’ll never learn how to love The Process from someone who hates it.

The beauty of Phase One Team Lifting is The Promise, the opportunity of hope guaranteed to everyone who chooses to exercise their free will and join. We make a promise to ourselves and each other that we will back each other up and never back down. From anyone or anything.

This is a copyrighted excerpt from a new book I’m writing to save us from wasting our potential. On another note, here is another top 100 Classic Rock back-to-basics workout song for the first 100 days of 2014. Stop being judgmental, stop gossiping, stop hating, start lifting. Be part of the constructive process instead of the destructive process. Play it out fully, not partially.

#peace.
