July has a special power on your fitness, physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually.  The 7th month has a powerful effect of body, mind, and soul, one way or the other.

July is the start of the third quarter. Coaching football taught that the start of the third quarter does one of two things – it ignites passion or kills is. It blows up passion into a full-blown inner fire or blows it up to pieces leaving you with none. The reason is the psychological effect of the mid-point. Halftime is the break in the action that promotes renewal or the break in the action that breaks your will. The effect of the mid-point in any process is the difference between winning and losing by whatever definition you choose.

Depending on how your mind has been conditioned to react to the mid-point of a process, you wind down or wind up. The 7th month will power you up or leave you powerless. The action or inaction in July is measured on New Year’s Day. The more action you take in July, the less you will need to resolve on New Year’s Day. The more inaction in July leads to more New Year’s resolutions that end up with the same result – inactivity. New Year’s resolutions are last-ditch efforts to correct wasted time after half-time. The solution is July resolutions, the same as third-quarter resolutions to get stronger longer than all the rest of the competition.

The secret starts at the top – mindset. The 12-month calendar year is a battle for your mind. If your passion is at a high at the mid-point, fuel it. Passion is limitless. Never assume you’ve reached the highest point because there isn’t one. On the flip side, if you’ve lost your passion, here’s a top secret motivational technique that never fails to work out if you do it right – think of the alternative. Think of the hell that you don’t want to happen. Then commit to prevent that hell.

If your fitness has gone to hell, make a July resolution. If your fitness has not gone to hell, make a July resolution to get to the next level. We’re in the third quarter of 2014. Don’t wait to New Year’s to resolve change. Make a July resolution that will change your life because truly, life is short enough. Don’t take time for granted. Make the most of your fitness, body, mind, and soul.

My workouts have gone to a next level for two personal reasons. Both are connected to the same place – hell. I’ve raised the bar because I have thought of the alternatives, about what I don’t want to happen regarding two issues that real-life reminded me about recently. My own workouts have gone to Level 14, a place I haven’t been before. The workouts of those who I coach have reached a new level because I have committed myself to return to the way I coached in the 80’s and 90’s, long before the Age of Softness hit. The best way to make a July resolution is to think big. Lift big weight, make big muscles, win big championship rings. Never stop lifting yourself and never stop lifting others because the alternative is hell.
