Here’s Real-Life Lesson #5,714 that I’ve taught football players for 40 years and college law enforcement students for 2 decades – demand it, supply it.
The women I coach in the basement of X Fitness do more to become more. They do more sets, more reps, and use more weight pound-for-pound in shorter time than my football players and students who I’ve coached in the gym during the past decade. They lift like the players who I coached before the turn of the century, before pressing keyboards replaced pressing weight. I don’t live in the past but I visit the past during every lifting session with the women I coach at X Fitness. They lift the same way with the same weight pound-for-pound as my football players did before screens paralyzed Generation WHY– the generation that asks, “why bother working out and why fight battles with a bar when you can fight battles on video games?” The women I coach in the basement of X Fitness are Generation X – the generation that’s the same as the old one that refuses to become the new Generation Why.
The secret to high-intensity workouts is the same today as it was before smart phones, selfies, and texting – demand it, supply it. The mind, body, and soul connection is wired together. The connection operates on a system of demands and supplies. The body and soul supply what the mind demands. Demand nothing, supply nothing. Demand more, supply more.
I have taught students and athletes that your biggest decision every day is to be more or be less. That decision affects your mind, body, and soul, and the minds, bodies, and souls of the rest of the world who are waiting for your God-given gifts and talents to work out for them – dual meaning. To help them be more and help them lift more – souls and weights. We’ve all been blessed to be lifted by those who strengthened us even when we didn’t deserve it. Now it’s our turn to reciprocate. There is no greater reward than soul-lifting. Nothing will out-pump the Lifter’s High – not big houses, not big cars, not big titles, not big vacations, not big parties, not big bank accounts.
When students and players complained about having to work out intellectually or physically, I reminded them it was a great day to lift for two reasons – you’re alive and you’re not in the intensive care unit. As long you woke up breathing, you’re having a great day. If you’re not on a cutting table in the morgue or emergency ward, you are blessed. The more you complain, the less you train. The less your train, the more you will complain when it all goes down the drain.
I have added several new songs to my Top 1000 Workout music, courtesy of three recent guests on Blunt Talk Podcast: Peter Noreika from Buffalo, New York; Gina Whitt from Alabama, manager of the Italian band FLEMT, and Reyne Brady, hip-hop artist from Australia. My Top 1000 Workout Music connects the past, present , and future. What was, what is, what will be. Train like your life depends on it. Train for those who depend on you. Lifting, both kinds – souls and weights – are joyous expressions of the soul and the strongest expression of love for your team. I’ve reminded students and athletes for decades that the next time you feel sorry for yourself and confuse a great day for a bad day, think of those who would gladly trade places with you – the sick, the dying, the hungry, the poor.
