Three landmark studies showed the same thing. Asch’s Line Experiment, Zimbardo’s Prison Experiment, and Milgram’s Shcok experiment showed evidence of the 66% Rule – at least 66% of humans are conformists. Followers. It’s human nature to adopt the thought and conduct of others even if it contradicts personal beliefs. These studies proved that the majority of humans are:
(a) afraid to be different
(b) susceptible to peer pressure.
Over two-thirds of people are easily brainwashed into believing anything. Anything at all. Over 66% will follow anyone and anything, blend into the mainstream, and disappear into a traffic jam of sameness. Over 66% will lose their originality, forfeiting their true self and replacing true self with some stranger just to fit into a crowd because of fear of originality.
Being original scares the hell out of the 66% because of fear of rejection by the mainstream. Fearing what others think is one of the leading causes of underachieving. It’s impossible to follow your calling when you’re following peer pressure. Following the crowd gets you stuck in the crowd, jam-packed in a mob shoulder-to-shoulder, losing your identity, losing all recognizable features that are unique to you only, and eventually you will lose your mind. Dual meaning – you will lose your own God-given talents that make you think uniquely and you risk going insane.
I use football and working out as a platform to teach a number of life skills but at the top at the list is how to fight peer pressure. One of the many things I vowed to escape from after I graduated high school was to escape the trap of peer pressure. The side-effects of peer pressure are devastating, including burying our true self so deep inside that it stays locked up for life. Falling victim to peer pressure wrongly gets our true self a life sentence imprisoned somewhere where no one can find it, including yourself and your loved ones who are counting on your true self to reveal itself.
At the top of my football coaching objective is to teach my players to follow their heart, not the crowd. Follow your soul, don’t get sunk on a hole. Be original. Planet Earth needs your originality. Being the same makes you disappear. You’ll never be remembered by conforming to the thoughts and actions of everyone else who have fallen victim to peer pressure. You will never separate from the rest. You will be forgotten. And worst of all, your potential gets wasted and your calling gets burned to hell.
Fighting the devastating effects of peer pressure starts with growth of two body parts – balls and heart. Grow some balls and learn to say ‘no’ to following The Lost aimlessly. The Lost are victims of peer pressure who have lost their true self and will likely never get it back because they have lost the will to fight to get their true self back. Say ‘no’ to following a misleading path that leads to nowhere. Then, grow your heart and follow it. Follow your heart because your heart calls you to your calling. It’s a tough fight but don’t give up the fight. The survival of your true self is at stake.
On another note, the next back-to-basics top 100 Classic Rock workout song for the first 100 workouts of 2014 is after my signature – “When the truth is found, to be lies, and all the joy within you dies….” Classic Rock for heavy squats. Find your truth. Don’t fall for lies. Never let the joy inside you die. # KeepLifting.
