I met with my new football team – Robert Bateman High School in Burlington – last week to set the ideological foundation of what we want to achieve and how to go about doing it. Among the number of messages I communicated, number one that topped the list was ‘the edge.’
The ‘edge’ is the champion’s mindset, the winning mentality that applies not just to football. It applies to every part of professional and personal life. Unless you’re certifiable, no one sets out to fail. No one in their right mind sets a goal to lose or to end up in last place. No one playing with a full deck makes it a top priority to get fired from a job or to let your business go broke so you lose everything you’ve worked for. The same applies to football. No one sets a goal to get the hell beat out of them.
The key to winning at anything in any field is to outperform your competition. Whether its sports, self-generated business that you start from scratch, or getting your dream job or dream promotion, outperforming your competition means being in better shape intellectually, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. The difference between getting in the shape you want and avoiding the shape you don’t want is the edge. Nothing else is more important. If you don’t have that edge, find someone who does and learn because without the edge, you will get eaten up alive. You won’t stand a chance. Real-life fights hard. Without the edge, you’ll never fight hard enough.
The edge is composed of intangibles that don’t just happen. No one is born with them. They don’t develop by accident, randomly, or overnight. And once you’ve got the edge, you can’t save it. You will lose the edge faster than it took to build it if you get soft – even temporarily. The edge is more than the conventional feel-good comforting positive-thinking schemes. The edge is living, breathing fire-power than doesn’t express itself with words. It expresses only through extraordinary action. Game-changing plays. Sustained effort that won’t back down no matter what.
The edge is often confused with trash-talking. The edge is an inner process fueled by an upper-level hunger that very few can achieve. The reason is comfort. Comfort spoils hunger. Comfort kills the edge. If you don’t have the edge, stay out of the game until you find someone hungry enough who can put the edge back inside you. If you’ve lost the edge, find a retirement village in a resort town or find someone hungry enough who can get you battle-ready.
The good news is that it’s never too late to find the edge. The bad news is that if you don’t find it soon, it will be too late.
On a different note, here’s the next back-to-basics Classic Rock top 100 workout for the first 100 days in 2014. It’s part of a never-ending process intended to build the biggest edge and never lose it. The link is after my signature.
