Don’t Get Weeded Out.

Here’s Real-Life Lesson #2,651 that I’ve taught football players for 40 years and college law enforcement students for 2 decades – don’t get weeded out. Dual meaning.

First meaning: Don’t get weeded out when you’re trying to make the cut. Don’t get weeded out by real-life. Don’t get weeded out by Professional Darwinism, Athletic Darwinism, or Academic Darwinism. Don’t get weeded out for not trying hard enough. Don’t get weeded out for not preparing enough. Don’t get weeded out for not training hard enough. When you’re fighting for the same thing as everyone else, fighting for it isn’t enough. You have to fight harder than the rest. Dual meaning – you have to fight harder to beat the temptation to rest and you have to fight harder than the rest who want the same thing you do. Contrary to what is being taught today, not everyone wins a championship ring. First place is a small place. There’s room for only one, reserved for those who won. Real-life doesn’t hand out championship rings to everyone to make you feel good when things go bad. Someone will get weeded out when you’re competing for the same thing. Don’t let yourself get weeded out.

Second meaning: Don’t get weeded out by weeding-out with legalized or illegal weed. Don’t help your competition by allowing yourself to get weeded out with weed, whether it’s illegal or legalized. Legalizing weed will only make it easier to weed out the weak. Weeding-out gets you weeded out. Weed does not strengthen. Weed weakens. Weed weakens you in mind, body, and soul. Beating the opponent is tough enough as it is. Don’t give the opponent an edge by weakening yourself by weeding-out with weed. Stay clean, get lean, play mean.

The Canadian federal government wants to legalize weed. Don’t get confused by the message this sends – making weed legal doesn’t mean weed will make you stronger or smarter. Weed weakens you physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. I’ve taught athletes and students for decades that DNA kills. DNA refers to Drugs ‘N Alcohol. Substance abuse kills mind, body, and soul. Substance abuse is the number-one form of sabotage to self and team. Substance abuse helps your competition because substance abuse weakens you. It’s the opponent’s job to weaken you. When you get wrecked on DNA, you’re doing the competition’s job. You’re making it easier for the competition to knock you on your ass and win.

My #1 objective as football coach and college law enforcement professor has always been the same – safety. Survival. Every workout, every practice, every game-day, every class, every graduation, I repeated the same message: stay alive – dual meaning. Stay alive officially, stay alive unofficially. They’re connected. Stay alive physically, stay alive in mind and soul. Don’t die prematurely in mind, body, and soul. High-risk sports and professions are a matter of life and death. People are counting on you. Your team depends on you.

Staying alive, both kinds, takes a fight. You have to fight to stay alive in high-risk activities. You have to fight to stay alive in spirit. If you give up the fight, someone else won’t. If you give up the fight, you will get weeded out. If you give up the fight, you will be tempted to weed-out. I’ve taught students and athletes for decades that weeding-out is an escape from real-life that ends up in another kind of escape – escape from real-life contention by getting weeded-out. Never lose by default. Winning by default is not a fair fight. It’s not a fight at all.

Here’s Real-Life Lesson #1,551 that I’ve taught students and athletes for decades – train like your life depends on it. Train for those who depend on you. Lifting, both kinds – soul-lifting and weight-lifting – are joyous expressions of the soul and the strongest expression of love for your team. Weeding-out is neither. Weeding-out makes you a bigger threat to your team than the opponent.

Next time you’re tempted to weed-out, think of your team that you are letting down, think of how you are weakening yourself, think of how you are weakening your team, and think of those who would gladly switch places with you – the sick, the dying, the hungry, the poor. Legalized or not, don’t fall in the weeding-out trap that gets you weeded-out. Be original. Be different than those who weed-out. Don’t conform to the juvenile peer pressure of weeding-out to make life easier for your competition by weeding yourself out.
