My poor illiterate immigrant Italian father, Antonio, hated football. He never played a down of football. He refused to let me play football. I played football behind his back. His priority was for me to work at manual labour/labor jobs during high school, not play a game that can maim. Antonio was right. I learned more life lessons from manual labour/labor than from playing football.
Antonio was the toughest human I have ever met. No exceptions. He fought in real wars. He suffered through depression, poverty, and unimaginable struggle and suffering. I have coached football for 40 seasons, all unpaid. Antonio never once came to a game I coached, never acknowledged my coaching career. We never had one conversation about football, not one word exchanged. Antonio was not a “fool†for not letting me play football. Antonio became the toughest human I have ever met without football.
My daughter has a 2 year old son. She may never let him play football. She is not a “fool.†I have a wife, 3 daughters, and 3 granddaughters who never have and never will play football. They have as much toughness and character as any football player I have ever coached. Football does not guarantee impeccable character. Football can also bring out your worst. I love the game of football but I don’t expect the whole world to love what I love. It’s unbelievable that an NFL coach would call people “fools” who won’t let their children play football.
