#DecemberLifting (dual meaning)

Here’s Real-Life Lesson #5,115 that I’ve taught football players for 40 years and college law enforcement students for two decades – #DecemberLifting is the toughest type of lifting. Dual meaning.

First meaning. I reminded athletes and students that December is the toughest time of the year to work out. Temptations are hell, literally and figuratively. Temptation will fight like hell to overtake your common sense. The voices of you inner demons will fight like hell to shout down and shut down the voice of reason – your conscience. Left unchecked, December will make you weak. December will make you fat in mind, body, and soul. Fat and muscle grows at different speeds. Fat grows like an unnatural anabolic agent. Natural muscle doesn’t. Fat always win the race. The same applies mentally. Your mind softens faster than it takes to get hard. Even though #DecemberLifting is hell, someone will lift – someone who you will face on the field or in the field. Someone who will fight for the same dream job as you. Or someone you have to fight crime against.

Second meaning. #DecemberLifting of souls is tough because it’s easy to forget what December is truly about. It’s easy to get caught up in your First World problems during your First World rush and think only of your stressed-out self and forget the rest. It’s easy to get stressed and depressed, forgetting that #DecemberLifting is for the benefit of everyone else. It’s easy to say to hell with #DecemberLifting and focus on getting as much as you can, as fast as you can, without giving a damn about anyone else. I reminded athletes and students how to fight the temptation to drop both kinds of #DecemberLifting – think of those who would gladly trade places with you – the sick, the dying, the hungry, the poor.
