Dear #MinnesotaVikings

Dear #MinnesotaVikings coaches, players, and fans:

I saw on the news that you handed a playoff game to the #SeattleSeahawks by booting away a golden opportunity. It must be hell. It’s too late for this season but here’s some advice – never rely on kicking to win. Go for it. Play for 6, not for 3. Here’s more advice – no offense to kickers, dual meaning.

First meaning. No offense to kickers means no disrespect to kickers. This is not a shot at kickers. I love kickers when they lineup and kickoff because that means you just scored 6. The kickoff is not what the football experts tell you it is. The kickoff is not a way to give the ball to the other team. The kickoff is a way to keep the ball. After it passes 10 yards, the ball is free. Up for grabs. Go for it.

Second meaning. No offense to kickers means you will get no offense by handing the game to kickers. The Minnesota head coach seemed to be sad and/or mad during the post-mortem also known as the press conference and post-game analysis. But, don’t blame the kicker. Blame yourself for handing over the offense to a kicker. Giving the offense to the kicker means no offense. So, no offense to the kicker but keep your offense on the field.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been asked why I don’t kick. One reason is no offense to kickers. We refuse to hand over the offense to a kicker and play with no offense. Another reason is to prevent 4th & hell – the hell of of losing a game late in the 4th quarter because of a missed chip shot. We will not endure the agony of 4th quarter and hell by losing in the last few seconds by converting football to soccer. 4th & hell for us is losing the game in the 4th quarter by playing soccer instead of football. Another 4th & hell for us is giving up the ball by punting to the other team because of fear of going for it on 4th down. 4th & hell for us is giving up on 4th down and going over the opponent’s heads instead of through them. If you can’t gain 10 yards on four tries, you don’t deserve to win. 4th & hell is not an option for our program. We don’t kick to prevent the hell of 4th & hell. Our team goal is to make the opponent suffer 4th & hell, not us.

Another reason we never kick is that the game should be won or lost by the players who played contact football for over 59 minutes leading up to the last-second play. Last-second field goals are no way to win a football game or lose a game. That’s our program philosophy and ideology. That is what we believe in. Go through the opponent, don’t go over their heads. Don’t take the easy way out and go over their heads. Don’t take the path of least resistance and go over their heads. Going over their heads is no way to get what you want in football or real-life. Meet them face-to-face and go through them, not over their heads.

Our football program is not restricted by the limitations of conventional thinking. We think outside the box until the box disappears. You learn more about real-life that way. We have the world’s longest no-kicking streak. We don’t go for it just in emergencies. We don’t go for it when there’s no choice. We go for it on 100% of 4th downs and after every touchdown because that’s what we believe in. Our players are taught not to fear being different. Win or lose, we will not suffer the 4th & hell of giving up the ball, giving up the offense, and giving up football for soccer. Going for it is our team’s #peace. Going for it is a joyous expression of our soul. 4th & hell is not.

4th & hell: season 1 is a true story I wrote that will inspire you to go for it when everyone else is afraid to. One of my former players, Leon Robinson, did the cover. Leon was not a kicker. He was a running back who went through the opponent, not over their heads. Leon was one of thousands of our players who prevented us from suffering 4th & hell in the 4th quarter or on 4th down. There’s an excerpt of 4th & hell: Season 1 at

Blessings & all good things.
