I heard a guy on TV the other day tell the world that a recent game he watched on TV finally made him feel excited. He said it was great to feel some excitement after so many years of his favourite teams losing. I’ve taught my teams for 45 years: vicarious thrills are sad. It’s sad if your excitement depends on watching rich athletes getting excited in their work by working their ass off and getting rich. I’ve taught my teams that vicarious thrills are cheap thrills. If you can’t generate your own excitement in your own relationships, your own work, your own workouts, you will continue to feel dead until you dramatically change what’s inside your head. Control your own adrenaline rush by participating. Never, ever relinquish control of your adrenaline rush by spectating. The moment you become a spectator, you pay a fortune to watch – dual meaning.
I’ve taught my teams for 45 yrs: if all the excitement you feel is watching your favourite teams work, win, and get rich, your have lost the ability to generate your own happiness. Instead, you are left with only cheap thrills. Those you watch and make rich will never, ever, ever watch you and make your rich. Guaranteed. They will never pay you the same way you pay them. That’s why the rich get richer. It’s a one-way relationship. You pour your energy, time, money into their success but they will never pay you. Nothing. Zero. If you poured your spectator energy into participator energy, you and your team would be superstars in mind-body-soul. Guaranteed. You would make a fortune. Guaranteed.
As long as you invest spectator energy, you will never, ever generate full-capacity workout-energy. You will always complain about lack of motivation. Good news: all your work and workout motivation problems can be solved by listening to yourself. That’s Real Life&Death Lesson #27,017 I’ve taught taught teams for 45 years: listen to yourself.
Listen to yourself carefully and you will solve the problem of feeling dead. Listen to yourself and you will hear every word that is making you feel dead. Bad news: it’s impossible to listen to yourself when you are willingly bombarding your brain – getting cheap thrills – with social media images of adults flexing, posing, exposing, tripping, binging. Good news: you can exercise free will and save your health in mind-body-soul by using head protection against chronic self-sabotage. If you choose not to, you’re making it easy for your competition to eliminate you.
I’ve taught teams for 45 yrs:
- If you’re healthy, you have zero excuses not to workout.
- You have zero excuses to give up training and let yourself go.
- When you’re fed-up with feeling f’d-up, don’t complain that you don’t get overnight results.
- Getting back in shape takes long construction work.
- Don’t complain about the equipment, the program, the coach, the world.
- Don’t blame the innocent for what you did to yourself.

Congratulations to college female & male student-athletes for the NIL Ruling. Coaches, colleges, universities do not control student-athlete’s ability to earn. Coaches, colleges, universities do not control players’ lives. Coaches move from team to team. Coaches earn. College female & male student-athletes, it’s your turn to earn. Lots of people got rich from you playing college sports. Your turn to get rich like the rest. Those who are crying about the NIL ruling should try to work for free, be banned from earning, have someone control their earnings while they work.
