Another New Job

Here’s Real Life lesson #2,507 that I’ve taught football players for 40 years and college law enforcement students for two decades: discernment of calling depends on the right call or wrong call – dual meaning.

First meaning: What do you want to do when you grow up is one of the top 5 questions that determine what you make out of your life and what life makes out of you. It determines the elusive happiness that is the subject of books, motivational speakers, life coaches, Youtube videos, Facebook posts, Tweets, and endless Linkedin articles, all intended to uncover the secret of happiness at work. The work you decide on doesn’t just happen. You are called to a vocation. The problem with Discernment of Calling is the type of messaging system you focus on. You will get a call. It’s up to you to pick it up or miss the call or answer the wrong call. Two out of those three end up in hell. If you miss the call or answer the wrong call, your career will be hell. All hell will break loose. You will eventually cause hell to those you work with and live with.

Second meaning: Even if you answer the right call, you will not be guaranteed happiness unless you make the right calls. Real-life is the equivalent of a football game – you have to make one call after another to score points. The objective of every call you make is to move in the right direction in order to achieve forward progress. The bad news is that the right call is not enough. You have to execute flawlessly or you get hammered to the ground.

I just call called for a new job – substitute Boot Camp Coach at X Fitness while Leeann Arcaro-King is on maternity leave. I answered the right call. Ladies’ Night/Happy Hour is now my temporary calling until Leeann’s maternity leave is over. Now the hard part starts – making the right call during every Boot Camp. Making the right call means calling the right sets and reps for one hour in order to help every Boot Camper reach the next level and the next and the next.

Here’s Real-Life Lesson #4,614 that I’ve taught players and students – you never stay in the Status Quo. You either grow up or you grow down. You are born to grow. Once you stop growing up, your body, mind, and soul revolt. You feel like hell. Then you look like hell and start sounding like hell. Then you spread hell all around you. Then the only change you make in the world is purely negative – all hell. The moment you stop growing up, you suffer the burning inner hell of Cognitive Dissonance where your potential mind, body, and soul fight with your underachieving mind, body, and soul, trapping you in Underachieving Hell, the copyrighted title of a new book I’m writing to help people prevent and escape from Underachieving Hell.

Life is too short to live in Underachieving Hell. Pick up the right call and make the right calls afterward. It’s not easy because Discernment of Calling has no Caller ID. You will be tempted to drive off-track until you crash and burn. You will be tempted by call-waiting while you’re answering the right call. You will be tempted with wrong calls – harassing calls and hang-ups that will leave you hung-up in Underachieving Hell. Wrong calls and missed calls are the product of broken focus. When you are distracted by the irrelevant and immaterial, you’ll answer any call just to feel important and to kill time. Then you will make one wrong call after another while those who are focused pass you and reach the next level that you were aiming for but didn’t have what it took to reach it.

What a mess when others reach the next level and you don’t. Watching others reach your intended destination is the leading cause of the Pissed-Off Life. Last week, my 6 year old granddaughter and I were standing in line at the grocery store. The cashier asked the customer in front of us, “How’s work?” The customer flipped. She started yelling, “I’M…OFF…TOMORROW…THANK…GOD” as she pounded credit card in perfect time with her angry voice. Grocery-Store Rage. Caused by having to think about a job that was held in contempt. I’ll bet that the angry customer wasn’t an angry 6 year-old. But, it’s easy for a 6 year-old to get exposed to adult broken dreams because the sound and appearance are unmistakable – sounds like hell, looks like hell because it feels like hell. That’s why it’s called Underachieving Hell.

My job as substitute Boot Camp Coach is to make sure that no one sinks to Underachieving Hell. It’s the same objective as being a football coach and college professor. We all share the same calling – lift. Be a soul-lifter. Rescue lost souls from Underachieving Hell. Prevent souls from sinking into Underachieving hell. Here’s Real-Life Lesson #1,921 that I have taught football players and college students every single day: if you are growing down and can’t find the energy to grow up, there are plenty of people willing to trade places with you – the sick, the dying, the poor, the hungry. Train like your life depends on it. Train for those who depend on you. If you stop training, don’t start complaining. The moment you stop training, you grow down. Everything starts sinking downward body, mind, and soul. Be more or be less – it’s your biggest decision today.
