Here’s Real-Life Lesson #9,002 that I’ve taught football players for 40 years and college law enforcement students for 2 decades: commit to a process.
The difference between winning and losing on any field or in any field is the level of commitment to a process, athletically or academically. It is impossible to build intellectual strength or physical strength without dedication to a process. A process is a training program, academically or athletically. A process is a concrete program of structured learning outcomes and performance outcomes, built on prerequisite learning and prerequisite performance. Prerequisites are building blocks of learning and performance. Each prerequisite is a link to a chain of academic or athletic performance.
The main reason for failed workouts is the lack of prerequisite outcomes. The absence of structure is the leading cause of failed workouts. The same applies to failure in any sport and in any classroom. Winging it won’t work out. Dual meaning. Workouts designed amateurishly without purpose will not achieve results, leading to injury and quitting working out.
My main challenge as a football coach and college law enforcement professor has been to convince athletes and student to commit to a process, academically and athletically. The process rewards those who commit to it. The uncommitted will not be rewarded.
I have coached and taught high-risk sports and high-risk professions for four decades. One element of high-risk training is lifting. I have reminded students and athletes of the following message for decades: Lifting rewards those committed to a process. Iron won’t reward the uncommitted. Iron is not an enabler. Unlike over 90% of your relationships, the gym will not enable your weaknesses. Nothing happens without a process except fat buildup. Nothing happens overnight except muscle turning to mush. The first time you get out of shape makes the second time easier. Left unchecked, you spend the majority of life in a state of weakness that always leads to regret.
